How does two-factor authentication work?
Two-factor authentication (or 2FA) provides an additional layer of security to your accounts. With 2FA enabled, after you log in with your username and password you will be asked to provide another form of authentication using a device that only you have access to. This will be in the form of a code provided by either an authenticator app or by text message.
How do I set up two-factor authentication for my Magnet account?
You can enable two-factor authentication in your “My Settings” options. To turn on two-factor authentication for your account, you will be prompted to scan a QR code using your device’s authenticator application or enter the provided setup key. Once you do that, enter the code that is generated by your authenticator app to complete setup and enable two-factor authentication.
You will need to download an authenticator app to your device. Two-factor authenticator for your Magnet account is compatible with most authenticator apps that generate new codes on a timed basis. Some options for apps include Google Authenticator (for Android | iPhone) , Authy (for Android | iPhone), Duo Mobile (for Android | iPhone | Windows Phone).
Once you set up two-factor authentication, you’ll be provided with recovery codes to allow you to access your account if you are unable to use your authenticator app. Make sure you save your recovery codes to a safe place that you will be able to access them if you need them.
After two-factor authentication is enabled, you will be prompted to provide a code from your authenticator app the next time you log in to your account.
Why do I need recovery codes?
Recovery codes are like “back up” two-factor authentication codes. If you lose access to your device or your authenticator app, you can use these recovery codes to log in. Save these recovery codes to a secure place and treat them as you would a password.
Each recovery code can be used a single time in place of your two-factor authentication code. Once you’ve used one code to log in, you won’t be able to use that code again.
You will only be shown your recovery codes at the time that you enable two-factor authentication for your account. There is no way to provide you with your recovery codes after the initial set-up has been completed. If you lose the accounts you were provided, you can generate new recovery codes by turning off two-factor authentication for your account, then turning it back on again.
What do I do if I can’t access my authenticator app?
If you can’t access your two-factor authentication codes, you can use one of your recovery codes as a two-factor authentication code to log into your account. Each recovery code can be used a single time. If you are locked out of your account, use a recovery code to log in: you will be able to turn off two-factor authentication through your settings until you can access your authenticator app again.
If you do not have your authenticator app and you cannot use your recovery codes, you can contact support. After we confirm your account, support will be able to disable two-factor authentication for your account to allow you to log in.
How do I turn off two-factor authentication?
You can turn off two-factor authentication at any time in your “My Settings” menu. When you go to turn two-factor authentication off, you will be prompted to confirm your choice. You do not need to provide an additional code to turn off two-factor authentication.
